Vertigo is a very common symptom presenting itself in chiropractic patients, especially after head and neck trauma. Vertigo is a sense of dizziness or spinning, sometimes associated with symptoms of nausea, and possibly even sweating.

Vertigo can have many causes and in most cases is a treatable condition. When you first visit a chiropractor to assess your vertigo, he or she will take you through a thorough examination before coming up with a proper treatment. In some cases patients will need to be referred to a neurologist, but for most, a chiropractor can treat the condition.

The most common cause of vertigo is from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Other common causes of vertigo are from acute vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis. Half of the cases of BPPV, referred to as idiopathic, occur for no known reason.

What are the known causes of BPPV?

  • Head injury
  • Severe cold or virus
  • Ageing
  • Minor stroke
  • Certain medicine
  • Whiplash/ head trauma

A chiropractor will be able to work with you, based on your assessment results, to move you into specific positions that will move the calcium carbonate crystals away into a different part of the inner ear.
